A few years ago, I was sitting on our upstairs toilet. As I sat there, I suddenly started feeling quite hot. Well, I must’ve been feeling hot, as I was sweating. Wait! Was I sweating? Well, there was moisture on my forehead. As I wiped my brow and looked up, I saw the roof was leaking. No sweat! Hmm.
After I’d finished and was about to leave the bathroom, I debated about telling my partner Kate about the roof leak I’d spotted. Or rather, had ‘spotted’ me. If I just shut the bathroom door and pretended the whole thing hadn’t happened, would it just go away? After about thirty seconds of internal debate, I went downstairs and told Kate. “Good news! We now have two showers upstairs! And one is very natural, with extra nutrients!”
What I had debated briefly, was trying to take the easy way out and ignore the issue. And perhaps I could’ve ignored it for a few weeks. Trying to ensure Kate didn’t go in that bathroom might’ve been tough, but, hey, that could be a problem for a new day. But I knew deep down that if I ignored this problem, I’d have to deal with a much bigger problem in the future. I think it’s a fairly safe bet to suggest that most of us would try and fix this roof leak problem sooner rather than later, as it should be easier and cheaper to fix the earlier you start.
But what about ‘leaks’ in our heads? Or negative thoughts that may just chip away at us one drip at a time? Do we ever do anything with these issues early? I’m sure some of us do, but generally what seems to happen is that we wait until the ‘whole bathroom is flooded’. We then open the door and get washed away down the stairs with the build-up of negative thoughts.
